It's a small step for Mr Contractor, but a big one, Bro, for South London Yoof. The 'SW9 Moon' (named 'cos it's grey and is full of craters') has closed for three months as a new surface is being laid.
Steady, girls
Conspiracy theorists suggest that the £80k forked out by the Lambeth Council knobbers for an inexperienced contractor to re-build Stockwell Skatepark two years ago never really happened.
A skating lifespan of five years was stated at the time. At least the Lambeth Council knobbers have been able to deliver one project under the specified time frame.
The 'epoxy concrete seed surface' (I'm not making this up) of 2005 was, well, poxy. Cracks appeared as soon as South London Yoof started to do his skateboard thing. I just sat on the sidelines with my camera and rued the day that my board (still got!) almost gave me a broken leg. Or two.
Shame about the 'summer' closure for South London Yoof, but with careful management of the project from the Stockwell Park Estate, trusted skatepark company Wheelscape has rolled into SW9 promising five inches of concrete.
Steady, girls.
Stockwell Skatepark has survived since the '70s and the first wave of skateboarding, and with as little interference from the Lambeth Council knobbers as possible, it will probably continue to serve South London Yoof over the next three generations.
Back in the day and I could Kickflip a Backside (really) with the best of them. I'm tempted to get the old board down from the loft, but I reckon South London Yoof will just give me a Backside Pop Shove It.
Bitter? Me? I hope your legs don't break, walking on the moon...
