obb Vs The Corporate Korfball Waltz*
Wednesday 16 July, 2008

The Stanley Matthews of the korfball world...

Well, that was a bit of a weird one: High Summer and hey hoe, it must be time for the annual *shhh* korfball club Companies Tournament held on Clap'ham Common. Except I'm not normally the company type. I'm about as corporate as an ex-army Corporate Major taking a stroll down Civy Street.

But I've been *shhh* networking myself a bit over the past twelve months. The annual routine of turning up in SW4 and being on camera duty extended to a bit of after hours activity this year. And nope, I don't mean that kind, either.

It's always weird when your various worlds collide. Tuesday evening saw me balancing the korfball bollocks with impromptu work meetings for an Exciting New Project that I'll hopefully be involved with, alongside some blokes I usually make conversation with after six pints of Guinness during the onionbagblog big night out in Brixton.

And all of this on a korfball court. Blimey. Weird or what?

After a day spent warming up on Sports Day snapper duty with the lovely people Somewhere in SE17 (yep, back in school for one day a week looking after the website - more work / life balancing...) it was time for the big boys and girls of the corporate world to be lined up in front of my lens. And they don't come with bigger egos than the fragrant mrs onionbagblogger.

Arriving (un) fashionably late ('corporate work, innit?') mrs obb kept in the corporate theme by playing up her office bitch persona all evening. It scared the shit out of me as she took control of reffing a penalty shoot out. It's her office junior I feel sorry for.

'Make sure you blag some of the free corporate sarnies,' I advised her. 'We've both been running the flag up the corporate pole so frequently of late that there's no food back at base.'

I thought she was going to give me the sack, such was her look of disgust.

But it wasn't all about the corporate work / life balance. At the end of the day, korfball was the winner, Brian. Actually it was the corporate beasts of the Royal Bank of Canada who walked away from Clap'ham Common as Kings (and Queens) of the corporate korfball world. It helps when you have a few basketball ringers in your team.

It's a bloody fine show that the good people of Supernova put on each summer, along with some help from our other korfballing friends in and around London. I'm just the Snapper Boy, told to turn up once a year and make the whole event look pretty. It's not too hard to be honest, given the requisite male / female ratio required for the mighty Dutch game.

Behind the scenes and there's a hell of a lot of effort involved: dealing with the Rotten Borough, inviting teams, setting up pitches and sorting out the reffing / coaching logistics on the evening. Plus there's the constant request for ringers as the Sales Manager from some corporate corner shop has a last minute deal to close.

Not for me though. My competitive korfball days are long gone. I have a knackered knee to demonstrate the dangers of a decade of stop / starting around the korfball courts of Croydon on a Sunday morning. It's always lovely though to catch up with the korfball crowd once a year.

All work and no play makes obb a dull boy, don't you know. And nope, I didn't score either. Correct on both counts.

Nice pictures though.
