Street art

Here's another example of how local art can help to transform the perception of an area. Stockwell Studios (nice site) has put up this permanent exhibition, showcasing the work of two hundred local children and exploring their memories of the area.

With help from art4space, the Inside-out exhibition aims to give budding local artists the opportunity to express their first memories in visual form. Fitting then that the pictures are being displayed on the site of what was the former Annie McCall Maternity Hospital.

It's not the most radical piece of art that the modern world has ever seen, but it is local, and it is being respected. The work is situated in the same place where a mural stood for over decade, not once tagged with graffiti. In the end it was a storm that saw off the original artwork.

I was taken back with the detail applied to Inside-out (it's also outside - geddit?) Each piece of art has been lovingly framed, with equipment donated by the artists within Stockwell Studios. The added touch of a couple of light switches to the display added to the authenticity.

I wasn't quite sure if the roadwork signs were art or arse, but y'know, it all added to that urban art feel.

Inside-out is being exhibited from now until the next Great Storm of Sunny Stockwell. Head down Jeffreys Road towards Larkhall Park, and look out for the roadwork furniture installations.
